The Town of Georgina’s Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) program will go live on Thursday, April 10. Five Speed cameras will record vehicles exceeding the posted speed limit (30 km/h or 40 km/h) in Community Safety Zones, one in each municipal ward.

When a vehicle is detected speeding, its image is recorded and reviewed by Provincial Offences Officers. Within 30 days, a monetary fine is mailed to the registered owner of the vehicle.

The fines, which do not include demerit points, are set by Ontario’s Highway Traffic Act.

If you drive 1 to 19 km/h over the limit, the fine is $5 per kilometre. However, if you drive 20 to 29 km/h over the limit, the fine jumps to $7.50 per kilometre.

The fine is $12 per kilometre for speeds 30 to 49 km/h over and $19.50 per kilometre for speeds 50 km/h over.

The fines are Administrative Penalties and can’t be challenged in court. However, there is a dispute process through the Town’s Administrative Penalty System.

The Town says ASE is a key component of its Safe Streets Monitoring Program, which was established to reduce speeding and will be used in conjunction with other traffic calming measures.

The Town website says reducing vehicle speeds significantly improves pedestrian survival rates.

For example, only one in ten pedestrians (10%) die after being struck by a vehicle travelling 30 km/h. However, 40% of pedestrians die at 60 km/h and 80% at 60 km/h.

The Town says the revenue generated from ASE will cover the program’s operational costs and fund other Safe Streets initiatives.

As of April 10, three ASE cameras will be operating in Keswick (Wards 1, 2, & 3): Lowndes Avenue near Tim Jacobs Drive, Wexford Drive near Ladyburn Drive, and Church St., west of Shoreline Place.

In Ward 4 (Sutton), the ASE camera is at Maple Avenue, approximately 550 metres north of Black River Road.

In Ward 5 (Pefferlaw), the ASE camera is on Station Road, approximately 240 m north of Old Homestead Rd.
