mRNA Vaccines (Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna)
Due to an increase in vaccine supply, York Region COVID-19 vaccination clinics are now offering both Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna mRNA vaccines.
If you have already received your first dose of an mRNA vaccine, you should get an mRNA vaccine for your second dose. Both the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna mRNA vaccines are over 90% effective at preventing serious illness and death due to COVID-19. The National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) considers these mRNA vaccines to be interchangeable.
Individuals age 12 to 17 will receive the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine as it is the only vaccine currently authorized by Health Canada for use in this age group.
If you received AstraZeneca as your first dose, with informed consent, you can get a second dose at an eight to 12-week interval and can choose to receive an mRNA vaccine or AstraZeneca for your second dose at a local pharmacy.
York Region Public Health is working with our local health care partners to provide COVID-19 vaccines at various locations across York Region. Clinic dates and times vary for each location. Please visit york.ca/COVID19Vaccine for specific clinic details.
York Region is making excellent progress in administering COVID-19 vaccinations. To date, approximately 80% of residents age 12+ have received their first dose vaccination and more than 64% of residents age 12+ are fully vaccinated.
Vaccines continue to be our best defense against COVID-19 and at keeping ourselves, loved ones, workplaces and community safe. The sooner people are vaccinated, the sooner lives can return to normal. Now that Ontario has moved to Step Three of its Roadmap to Reopen, it is important as many people are protected as possible. With increased gathering limits and indoor activities permitted, we know COVID-19, especially the Delta variant, can spread quickly amongst groups.
