As the Georgina Studio Tour hits its 30-year milestone, visitors are invited to step into artists’ studios, check out their work, and maybe even take home some truly unique creations.
This year 43 artists, including 6 newcomers, will showcase a range of artwork across 26 locations—from paintings and sculptures to pottery, quilts, jewelry, decorative glass, woodwork, textiles, fiber art, prints, and photography. The Georgina Arts Centre & Gallery will also be one of the stops.
Barbara Banfield, Acting Chair and pottery expert, says, “I’m excited for how rich the arts scene is in Georgina. We have a great artistic community, not only of talented makers but also of people who truly appreciate and support the arts. Last year was our most successful yet, with excellent sales and great community involvement.”
Banfield says that she and the six other members of the steering committee very much focus on working with the community and the Town. “We’re looking to do more together, and we’ve noticed a lot more interest and support. This year, we have 12 sponsors, which is the most we’ve ever had.”
Today, the Georgina Studio Tour stands as one of the biggest in Southern Ontario. But it was not always this way. Catherine Babick, an accomplished painter who introduced the arts to Georgina, remembers a time when the local schools offered no art programs and there were few artistic activities.
Driven by her passion, she started the Georgina Studio Tour and the Georgina School of Art 30 years ago, thus shaping and expanding the local arts scene.
Georgina is growing and so is its art community. One of the artists joining the tour for the first time is Paula Coop McCrory. She says, “I’ve known about the tour since moving to Georgina a few years ago, and this year I decided to take part. I’m excited and honored to be involved.”
The Studio Tour takes place on September 28 and 29, the same dates as the Pow Wow. Also, don’t miss the lively street sale on High Street in Sutton! It’s going to be a blast— don’t miss out!
