The Learning Cafe, located at the Link community hub on Dalton Road in Sutton, had its grand opening on September 3.
This initiative by Routes Connecting Communities Inc. is open every Tuesday and Thursday and was created to give youth the opportunity to gain ‘on the job’ skills.
Isaac Colt, aged 19, had dreams of working in architectural design but when his life went off the rails, he moved into the Sutton Youth Shelter. Colt is one of the employees at The Learning Cafe and said, “I have no career plans now, but I like working here.”
Colt has already found another part-time job as a dishwasher at The Boondocks Eatery in Virginia Beach.
Cori Doern from Jackson’s Point is the Executive Chef and Educator at The Learning Cafe and said, “We are so proud of Isaac for having the integrity to say he couldn’t work Tuesdays and Thursdays because he had a previous commitment here at The Learning Cafe.”
Doern explained that her team earns minimum wage and is encouraged to get their Ontario Food Handler certificate. “We are providing a safe environment and place to get paid while learning life skills. It’s more than pouring the perfect cup of coffee. It’s noticing the revenue, adapting to challenges, and figuring out a sustainable business model.”
Doern’s team of “at-risk youth” began training in July and were well-prepared for the 50-plus customers that came to sample the snacks and drinks on opening day.
Shirley Woods from Sutton attended the event and said, “It’s a great opportunity for young people and the people who visit the Link throughout the day. My blueberry raspberry slushie was delicious!”
Ashley Pauze, aged 20, has already been promoted to Head of Kitchen and said, “I love working in the kitchen and want to be a pastry chef.”
Melissa Chatt, aged 17, is learning how to maximize her income by selling her handmade jewelry at The Learning Cafe. Chatt said, “I consider the people here at The Learning Cafe to be my family. I met a lot of my friends at the Sutton Youth Shelter.”
Adam Gasperski, aged 33, lives in Jackson’s Point and designed the logo for The Learning Cafe. “I’m very happy to be cancer-free as of today and I am finding new customers for my graphic design here. I’m currently working on a logo for Wela’s Empanadas.”
The Learning Cafe is open every Tuesday and Thursday from 8.30 am – 4.30 pm at 20849 Dalton Road, Sutton.
