When Georgina voters head to the polls on Monday, April 28, a few surprises will be in store.

Georgina is now part of a new federal riding called York-Durham — York Region’s largest riding stretching 1,823 square kilometres with 116,500 residents and 96,869 electors.

York-Durham includes Georgina, Brock, Uxbridge, Scugog, and rural areas of Whitchurch-Stouffville, as well as the Chippewas of Georgina Island and Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nations.

That’s not the only surprise —MP Scot Davidson is no longer on the ballot.

Davidson is the Conservative Party of Canada (CPC) candidate in the new riding of New Tecumseh-Gwillimbury, which incorporates East Gwillimbury, Bradford West Gwillimbury and New Tecumseh.

Davidson won York-Simcoe handily in the last federal election held in 2021, with 24,900 votes or 50% of the total vote. Liberal Daniel Johnson finished second with 14,469 votes (29%). Benjamin Jenkins, NDP, was third with 6,800 votes (13.6%).

York-Simcoe has been a blue riding since 2004 when Peter Van Loan won 45.3% of the vote.

The previous Durham riding also elected a CPC candidate in 2021, former Opposition leader Erin O’Toole, who was replaced by Jamil Jivani in a by-election last year.

However, both Pickering-Uxbridge and Markham-Stouffville elected Liberals in 2021.

Still, the website 338canada.com projects CPC to win York-Durham with 56% of the vote as of April 5, with the Liberals finishing second with 35% and the NDP third with 5%.

According to the Elections Canada website, four candidates are registered in York-Durham (April 7).

Jacob Mantle, an international trade lawyer and former Uxbridge councillor, is the Conservative Party of Canada candidate.

Justin Graham, a Georgina resident who ran provincially for the Ontario NDP in York-Simcoe, is the NDP’s federal candidate.

Patricia Conlin, a resident of Port Parry and a small business owner, represents the People’s Party of Canada.

Matthew Pearce is the candidate for the Green Party of Canada.

Although his name is not posted on the Elections Canada website yet, Rob Grossi, five-time Georgina Mayor, is the candidate for the Liberal Party of Canada.

The complete list of candidates will be available on Wednesday, April 9.
