Construction crews are busy completing the necessary roadworks to open a multi-use pathway for pedestrians and cyclists and one-way eastbound traffic lane on Lake Drive East, from Civic Centre Road to South Drive.
According to the Town’s social media accounts, the newly configured seasonal multi-use pathway and one-way road officially opens for public use at 7 a.m. on Thursday, June 26.
The most significant road works are at the east end of the multi-use pathway, where Lake Drive East, which is two-way from Dalton Road to South Drive, transitions to one-way at the intersection of Lake Drive East and South Drive.
There, the road is being widened to accommodate the extension of the sidewalk on the north side of Lake Drive East and to provide additional space for motorists to make a left turn onto South Drive, diverting westbound traffic to Metro Road.
The sidewalk extension, west of South Drive, will separate pedestrians and cyclists from traffic at the intersection, providing a safe transition to and from the multi-use pathway.
The Town will also install a traffic island to prevent westbound traffic from entering the multi-use path and a physical barrier, on the southwest corner, to stop eastbound traffic from making a right on South Drive.
While the current stop sign at South Drive will be removed to improve traffic flow, a new stop sign will be installed on Hardwood Drive. There will also be five new speed bumps, three on South and two on Hardwood, to help reduce speed and traffic volume.

Meanwhile, at the western transition of the multi-use path, less construction will be required.
At Civic Centre Road, the two-way road will transition to the multi-use path and one-way eastbound lane.
A new all-way stop will be installed at the intersection of Civic Centre Road and Lake Drive East, with signage indicating the start of the multi-use pathway.
Along the length of Lake Drive East, line markings will separate the multi-use pathway and one-way traffic lane, with flexible bollards physically blocking vehicles from turning into the multi-use pathway.
Permanent traffic calming measures will also be implemented between Varney Road and Dalton Road, including the installation of stop signs, speed bumps, and six new pedestrian crossings.
According to the Town, the multi-use pathway and one-way designation are seasonal, only in effect during the high-traffic summer months, and Lake Drive East will revert to a two-way road after October 3.
