Under stormy clouds, Virginia United Church offered a cozy refuge and the perfect venue for the latest performance in the Cedar Hedge Concert Series.

Matt Large continues to bring some of Canada’s finest singer-songwriters to this intimate setting. This time it was award-winning Lynn Miles.

Boasting over 900 songs in her repertoire, Miles admitted that narrowing down a set is always a challenge. “They’re all my children and I want them all to go out every night,” she joked while shuffling through a hefty pile of lyric sheets. In the end, she relies on her mood and the audience in the room to guide her choices.

And the room matters. “I like how intimate this venue is,” she says. “It feels like I can say what I want to say, and people really take it in.”

The cozy setting shaped the concert from start to finish, turning every song into a conversation, with listeners clearly tuned in to the emotional pull of her words.

Matt Large with Lynn Miles

Miles is a natural storyteller, joking with the crowd, and weaving personal stories between songs. Her material spans the highs and lows of life: love, loss, reflection, and the complicated beauty of being human.

She spoke, in her own disarmingly honest way, about family and about love. “Having grown up in a family where affection wasn’t expressed openly, I now say ‘I love you’ all the time. Even to strangers!” she joked.

The audience loved her warm humour and self-deprecating charm. What truly resonated, of course, was her voice: strong, clear, and carrying lyrics that touch the heart.

She closed with “100 More Years,” a heartfelt, slightly mischievous reflection on life, about what we’ve missed, what we should try, and the wish for just a little more time to live fully.

Don’t we all relate?

With humor, heart, and just the right touch of mischief, Lynn Miles reminds us that life’s ups and downs are better met with a song!
