The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) announced this week the results of the First Nations cannabis authorization lottery, which will allow the winners to open a brick and mortar cannabis store on their respective reserves.

There were eight licenses up for grabs, but Georgina Island First Nation is not among the winners.

The AGCO also posted a wait list of 18 First Nations, however, Georgina Island FN was not listed.

The AGCO’s deadline for applications was set for July 31, the eight licences were to be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis.

At this time, it’s unclear if the Band participated in the lottery process.

However, the Band has already built a cannabis retail store at the Island View Business Centre, located on the mainland across from Georgina Island.

The story is developing, and the Post has requested comment from the Band office.
