Every summer the Town of Georgina hires more than a hundred students to work at various seasonal jobs.

Most of these students count on summer employment with the Town to help finance their university and college studies.

However, this summer is shaping up to be unlike any other. And, with all of the Town’s beaches, parks, and recreational facilities closed due to COVID-19, there is no need for seasonal hires.

“The Town anticipated hiring 143 summer seasonal employees. At this point in time, nobody has been brought on board and the decision to hire those positions is on hold until it is safe to do so given the current pandemic,” according to a spokesperson for the Town.

This decision follows the Town’s recent announcement to lay off 48 part-time staff, including 13 Library students.

The federal government recently announced nearly $9 billion in support for students, many of whom have lost employment due to COVID-19, and are not eligible for the CERB.

The Canada Emergency Student Benefit (CEBS) promises to provide $1,250 per month for eligible students from May through August 2020, and $1,750 for students with dependents and those with permanent disabilities. The CEBS, like the CERB, will be delivered through the CRA.

There is also a promise to boast funding for the Canada Student Loan program and to change its eligibility requirements to allow more students access to expanded loans and grants, including doubling Canada Student Grants up to $6,500 for full-time students, and up to $3,500 for part-time students.

There are new volunteer positions, called national service activities, being created to support the government’s COVID-19 response through the Canada Student Service Grant, which will provide up to $5,000 to students. More details will be available on the “I Want to Help” platform (website), which is yet to launch.

The federal government will also expand existing skills development programming for youth to create up to 116,000 jobs and placements to help students find employment this summer and over the coming months.
