Have you ever wanted to try your hand at a low-pressure outdoor sport? Then get rolling this summer with the Georgina Lawn Bowling Club!
Every Wednesday night at 6:30pm during the month of July, the ROC is offering lessons and play for $10. Instructors are teaching rules, technique, and sport etiquette.
If that time isn’t convenient for you, Elizabeth Sampson, President of the Georgina Lawn Bowling Club explained that anyone can visit and play for a nominal cost for the first three times. After that, it’s $100 for a six-month membership.
Sampson joked that the lawn used to be wide open but, “one day we showed up and there were cows from across the road grazing on the green. Now we enclose it.”
Thursdays are Game Night when younger players congregate to play Aussie Pairs (two players per team), or 4-3-2-1 (a singles game). The club plays music and there is socializing afterwards. Saturdays are normally Club Tournaments followed by a barbecue.
Sampson said, “There is a stigma that lawn bowling is an old man’s sport. That is totally wrong. People who do not want to play baseball, soccer, tennis, or any other competitive sport can get involved, compete, win money, and make new friends.”
The Georgina Lawn Bowling Club has been active since 1980, when an old one-room school house was moved to the Civic Centre. At that time the membership was $1 and there were 41 members.
Sampson said, “The older members are unbelievable bowlers, who are so supportive to the new members. By sharing our club’s history and our goals, I am hoping that the citizens of Georgina become aware of a club that offers socializing, athleticism, health improvements and a feeling of belonging.”
