The fire started before 6 a.m. on Saturday, August 17, and engulfed most of the garbage drop-off area at the Transfer Station, according to Georgina Fire Chief Ron Jenkins.
Georgina Fire responded with seven apparatuses and the fire was quickly extinguished with no injuries to staff as the facility was not yet open.
Jenkins says it will be difficult to determine the exact cause of the fire, as it was mainly garbage that combusted.
Jenkins is urging residents to comply with York Region’s restrictions, these include not dropping off garbage bags filled with grass clippings or household batteries.
The Georgina Transfer Station (23608 Warden Ave) will be closed on Monday and possibly longer, as officials determine the extent of the damaged and whether or not it can be operated safely.
Meanwhile, York Region is recommending residents take their waste to the East Gwillimbury Household Hazardous Waste and Recycling Depot (225 Garfield Wright Boulevard) or the Elgin Mills Community Environmental Centre (1124 Elgin Mills Road East).
