After Georgina experienced a rise in violent crime last year, including three shootings in one neighbourhood, YRP is increasing patrols and will host a Community Safety Forum for residents on Wednesday, January 15, at the Stephen Leacock Theatre from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

A YRP spokesperson says members of YRP’s Hate Crime, Diversity and Cultural Resources, and Crime Prevention Units will be joined by Crime Stoppers.

However, according to the spokesperson, topics discussed will cover general crime prevention and not focus on any one specific type of offence or incident.

Despite the spike in gun violence, YRP wants to reassure the community that all three shootings were targeted and not random acts.

“However, we recognize these crimes are alarming and can jeopardize the community’s feeling of safety and well-being. In response to these incidents, YRP is increasing its presence throughout the community, including additional patrol cars and foot patrols,” a recent media release stated.

YRP has also installed a temporary CCTV camera at the corner of Church St and Natanya Boulevard, close to where the most recent shooting occurred last November.

“The CCTV camera has been strategically positioned to capture any suspicious vehicles in the area and act as a deterrence to prevent any additional crime,” the YRP spokesperson said.

YRP is also encouraging residents who have residential and commercial security cameras to sign up for its security camera registry, which allows YRP to contact residents with cameras to assist police if a crime occurs later in that area.

“We want to thank the residents in the Town of Georgina for their continued support in working with YRP,” Chief Jim MacSween said.

“Community safety is a shared responsibility. If you see something suspicious in your neighbourhood, report it to the police. Get to know your neighbours – if you don’t already – and establish the bonds of trust essential to keep communities safe.”

Residents with information about these shootings or any gun-related violence are encouraged to report these crimes immediately to the YRP non-emergency line at 1-866-876-5423 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
