After capturing the imagination of young minds since its launch in January 2023, the Georgina Chess Academy is making the next move—bringing the timeless game to seniors.

The new drop-in program, open to players of all skill levels, starts this summer – and it is free.

Alice Burrows, administrator for the Academy, says, “Chess challenges the brain; you have to know the rules, think ahead, and outsmart your opponent. It is great for cognitive health, which is something many seniors, including myself, need!   Plus, we are offering a welcoming place to socialize with other seniors in our own community.”

Beginners will be in good hands with one-on-one help from local high school volunteers and seasoned players, like John Burrows, co-founder of the Academy.

“I’m not aware of any other local organization offering a program like this,” says Alice Burrows. “We plan to reach out to other senior programs in Georgina— Club 55, the Link, and the Optimist Club—to spread the word. We know there is a real need. From the very beginning of the Georgina Chess Academy, we have had adults asking for a place to play chess. This new program is our response to that interest.”

The drop-in program will take place on Thursdays, beginning July 10, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Georgina Community Church, 1816 Metro Road, Jackson’s Point.

It is free to attend. For more information, email georginachessacademy@gmail.com or visit Georgina Chess Academy on Facebook.
