Black River Coffee is brewing more than just great lattes these days. It is becoming a home for local creativity, the town’s unofficial arts hub where words flow, music plays, and art hangs on every wall.
The café has always supported local talent and is now offering a space where writers can gather and share their words. It’s free, it’s local, and it’s happening. Just grab a coffee and join in.
“There’s so much talent in Georgina,” says café owner Elaine Coates. “These days, a lot happens online, but people still crave that in-person connection. I love trying new things, and when some local artists approached me, I realized there was a real need for space, so I opened my doors to them. They can display their work, host readings, play music—and it’s all free.”

Writer and event organizer Sheila Horne-Teixeira explains, “I used to host and attend events like this in big centres, so I thought—why not try it here, where I live? It’s hard to find a space, so I’m grateful Elaine said YES right away. Now I’m planning a series of readings with a little guitar music in between to mix things up.”
Harold and Betty were drawn in by the promise of guitar music they love. Betty says, “We really enjoy music, but readings are new to us—and we like it a lot! We also love supporting local talent and businesses, so that’s why we are here.”
Music by the excellent guitarist Mark Teixeira was a big hit with the audience. His soft, mellow guitar perfectly set the mood, and everyone agreed that mixing music with the readings was a great call.
Wendy Stimson summed it up: “The perfect afternoon—words, music, the company of fellow art lovers, and… Elaine’s melt-in-your-mouth butter tarts!”
The next event is planned, and the date will be announced shortly. Think about participating…
