The ice may have melted from the devastating storm that hit our region in March, but the aftermath still lingers. Hydro was out for weeks in some neighbourhoods and families in hard hit regions like Pefferlaw were forced to throw away the contents of their fridges and freezers.

The Adopt-a-Fridge initiative was created by Sutton resident Maureen McDermott and, with help from the community, raised $700 in grocery gift cards to support those still recovering from the storm’s impact.

“When families in Pefferlaw quietly needed help after the storms, these amazing Georgina business owners stepped up and donated $100 gift cards to help restock fridges and pantries,” said McDermott, a local wedding officiant and photographer.

Jennifer Aves, owner of Balanced Health Solutions, was one of the donors.

“Community is about lifting each other up. It was important for me to help, even in a small way, to ease the burden for families who were affected,” Aves said.

Other donors include Zaheeda Rahim from Affordable Car Rental and Sales; Carolyn Grossi, an outreach specialist from Routes Georgina; Keswick realtor Mercedes Weber; Ivy Hendrickson from Life Happens with Ivy; Keswick realtor Christine Burton; and Tonya McConnell from Aspira Retirement Living.

McDermott, who created awareness for Adopt-a-Fridge on her Facebook page, said, “But this isn’t just about the donors. It’s about being part of a Chamber community where people care, step up when they can, and support each other in so many ways — visible and invisible.”

Gift cards collected through the initiative have been delivered to the Pefferlaw Lions Club, which will ensure fair and discreet distribution to families in need.
