If Sutton felt more like Whoville this Saturday, it’s because it absolutely was. The annual Grinch-inspired street festival drew crowds in the thousands—families in costume, kids racing for stamps, and more than a few Grinches roaming around – from towering, full-sized versions to tiny, giggling minis.

“I’m here tonight because of all the fun,” says Karen Wolfe. “I wouldn’t miss one of the best events of the year! It brings so many people together. And truly, organizer Elaine Coates deserves all the credit. She’s phenomenal. A real community hero.”

This praise is for the Black River Coffee owner who is allergic to taking credit. She’s quick to redirect it to the co-organizers, Debbie Balinas, Mike Anderson, Nick & Carrie Lekatis, Cynthia Ryan, and Ward 4 Councillor Dale Genge, as well as the volunteers, and even this year’s Grinch, all of whom make the event a success.

And indeed, they do tremendous work! Elaine moves through the crowd at lightning speed, checking on everything and solving problems. When she pauses long enough to chat, she explains this year’s new attractions.

“We added the Grinch’s lair, where he snacks on onions,” she says. “There is also a fire performer, and a ‘house on fire’ display to teach kids about fire safety. It’s fun, and it sneaks in some valuable lessons. Every year we try to add surprises.”

Local businesses felt the boost too. “It’s amazing to see this kind of crowd,” says Joe Agnello, owner of The Georgina Music Store on High Street. “Hundreds of people came through, many first-timers. It’s a great evening for families and great exposure for small businesses.”

Families shared that enthusiasm. Angela, a first-timer, with her daughters Rosa and Everly, says, “the Whoville twist is a fun change from the usual holiday events.”

Entire families showed up in coordinated Grinch outfits, including Amanda and Greg with their children Lukas (8) and Thomas (5), all proudly green and grinning.

Another Greg and his daughter Emma (9) were equally enthusiastic. “She likes everything!” he laughs. Meanwhile, Noah (5), clutching a Grinch toy, declared the event his new favorite holiday tradition.

Once again Whoville sparkled, thanks to fearless organizers who wouldn’t let the Grinch steal Christmas—or the joy.
