Sutton Festival On High: Duck Races A Big Hit Again!

It was a hot and humid day – with temperatures hitting the mid-30s, but that didn’t keep the crowds away from the Sutton BIA’s seventh-annual Festival on High. With 20 plus vendors, live-entertainment, horse and buggy rides, and bouncy castles, there was a lot to see and do for the whole family.

“It’s just an opportunity for the community and for visitors outside the community to get here and experience all of what Sutton has to offer,” said Ward 4 Councillor Frank Sebo, who’s been working to improve Sutton’s streetscape. “Events like this showcase Sutton’s potential. And we’re very excited about the future.”

The highlight of the festival was the Sutton Kinette duck race, where folks could purchase a $2, $5 or $10 duck.

This year there were three races. The first race was for ten $50 prizes; the second featured first, second and third place prizes of $300, $200, and $100; and, new this year, a $10 duck race for a grand prize of $500.

Needless to say, there was a lot of tension at the finish line for that one.

But it was all for a good cause, according to Cathy Loitsch, the outgoing president of the Kinette Club of Sutton:

“All the proceeds today go towards local charities in Georgina: Hospice, Jericho, and Georgina Cares. We also provide the three local high-schools with funds for bursaries, and support the Alzheimer and M.S. Societies of York Region as well”
