Ever wonder about the true stories and lives of our local farmers? Beyond the Fields is a short documentary created as a part of the Town of Georgina’s Grown in Georgina campaign.
The fifteen-minute film, produced by local filmmaker Quinn Corkal, premiered on Tuesday, November 19, at ClearWater Farm’s barn.
Corkal, owner of Quinn Aden Video Production and Photography, said, “Every time I would visit one of the farms, I would always come away feeling like I wanted to have a stronger connection to them. I always knew that there were some incredible stories just waiting to be told, and I’m grateful that I had the opportunity to tell some of those stories through the lens.”
This project goes behind the produce and takes an intimate look at dairy production, educational farming, market gardens, beekeeping, and harvesting apples. Behind-the-scenes footage allows viewers to meet the people who devote their lives to nourishing Georgina.
Corkal said, “We began filming in early September, so it was an ambitious timeline. The original plan was to create a shorter documentary, somewhere around five minutes. But once I started filming, I knew it needed to be longer. We always knew we wanted to release it before the holidays.”
The film features Belridge Farms, Elmgrove Organic Collective, Homestead Orchards, ClearWater Farms, and Hiveshare. Beyond the Fields was also made possible with the generous support of York Region, ClearWater Farm, and Central Counties Tourism.
Mayor Margaret Quirk said, “Beyond the Fields highlights the important contributions of our local farmers and offers a heartfelt glimpse into their lives. It’s a story of passion, hard work, and community.”
Councillor Dale Genge attended the premiere screening and said, “The film provides insights into the life of farmers and their importance to our economy and general well-being- they keep us fed!!!”
Beyond the Fields will have a live, free online premiere on Vimeo on Thursday, November 28, at 8.00 pm. The showing will be followed by a live Q&A with Corkal on Instagram, who can be found @quinnaden.
