There’s now a pop-up bookstore at the Georgina Center for Arts and Culture (GCAC) in Sutton. Literary lovers no longer have to drive to Uxbridge to shop at Blue Heron Books. The award-winning independent store is known for its strong community connections and comfortable atmosphere.

A corner of the gallery has been transformed into tables full of best-sellers, children’s books, autobiographies, thrillers, romances, and other compulsive page-turners.

Shelley Macbeth, the owner of Blue Heron Books, said, “We’ve spread our wings and are testing the marketplace in Georgina. The gallery is the perfect place for art to meet literature.”

For those who like to purchase cozy textile art with their reading material, the pop-up also features the art of Susan Day.

Day has been creating her wall hangings and blankets for over 20 years and said, “Having the pop-up has helped with my Christmas list. I’ve bought three books already; there are so many good titles here.”

Susan Day & Charlotte Hale

Charlotte Hale, artistic director for GCAC, said, “The pop-up has been very popular. Our patrons are delighted that there is now a bookstore in Sutton with such a great selection.”

Hale said, “There is a literary theme, Words & Deeds, going into the New Year, and the pop-up ties in well with our writing contest.”

The bookstore will be operating at the GCAC at least until March and is in coordination with the 7 Stories Writing Competition, which is sponsored by Blue Heron Books. Contestants are asked to choose one of seven selected pieces from the GCAC Permanent Collection, and write a flash fiction story of no more than 400 words based on the art.

There is a $25 entry fee and winners can win cash prizes. The deadline for entries is Friday, January 10, 2025.

The GCAC will be closed for a gallery refresh from January 6 – 19. To learn more about the 7 Stories Writing Contest, visit https://thegcac.ca/event/7-stories-a-writing-competition/
