It’s a milestone year for the 45th annual Georgina Terry Fox Run, and participants are rallying behind the cry of “Finish It.”

Registration for this non-competitive event begins at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 14, with the walk/run/bike starting at North Gwillimbury Park at Roches Point.

Terry Fox’s iconic 1980 Marathon of Hope inspired the annual Terry Fox Run, which raises millions of dollars every year for cancer research and continues to inspire Canadians.

Bring your bike, jog, or walk your leashed, friendly dog and choose a one, five, or 10 kilometer route. Spectators also welcome to come and experience the day. Enjoy community spirit, DJ music, a Kids’ Zone, merchandise, snacks, and more.

Limited edition 45th anniversary Terry Fox Run merchandise with the “Finish It” message will be available on-site or online at shop.terryfox.org.

Items include T-shirts, toques, ball caps, track pants, hoodies, or tote bags and support cancer research. You can also pre-purchase swag at the Keswick Canadian Tire or Sutton Home Hardware.

Laurie Pangman-Carriere, her husband Mike Carriere, and daughter Crystal Pangman are the longtime organizers for the event.

“It’s incredible how far cancer research and cancer treatments have improved in 45 years but we all must continue Terry’s fight against cancer until there’s a cure for all. Every person counts and so does every dollar in the fight against cancer to save lives,” said Laurie Pangman-Carriere.

“I hope our community will raise more than $50,000 this year, a dollar for each person in Georgina, and she encourages everyone to fundraise, donate to fight cancer to save precious lives.”

Although the Town of Georgina had hoped the new Terry Fox Park would be ready in time for the event, it will likely be another month or two before the 3.8-acre community park in the Orchid Trail subdivision of Keswick opens.

Bob Ferguson, manager of parks development and operations, said, “Staff are actively working with the developers for a fall opening of the Terry Fox Park.”

Designed in partnership between the Town of Georgina and the developer Treasure Hill, the park will feature a dedicated “Marathon of Hope” walking and running trail, play areas, and green spaces that connect to nearby parks through an extended trail network.

Mayor Margaret Quirk said, “We need to keep his memory, his legacy alive for future generations.”

Registration and donations can be done online at www.terryfox.org.
