When the Stephen Leacock Theatre opened its doors in 1985, few could have predicted just how central it would become to Georgina’s cultural life. Forty years on, the 295-seat venue is still doing what it does best: making memories, brewing creativity, and turning neighbours into castmates and lifelong friends.
For Kate Ottaway, Theatre Services Coordinator, the theatre is practically woven into her biography. “I grew up here,” she says. “I had my dance recitals on this stage and performed in shows with the Queensville Players. I was about 15 when I was cast in Hello, Dolly! After university, I came back to Georgina, and I’ve worked at the theatre for 14 years. This place is a huge memory maker for me.”
That feeling of belonging is felt by everyone who steps into the theatre, whether they’re in the audience or behind the scenes. “The Leacock Theatre has been such a blessing to this community,” says Jackie Diasio, long-time member of the Queensville Players. “I started doing costumes, then took to the stage, acting, singing, and even producing. So many talented people started in this theatre and later became professionals. I’ve made lifelong friends here — it is a second home to so many of us.”
For Mary Shanks, the theatre shaped her entire family. “My 3 kids grew up on that stage,” she says. “One still performs — he had a lead role in Footloose here. I’ve been involved since 2008, onstage, backstage, on the board… it’s like a family. This building brings us all together.”

Carol Eakins, who has been coming to shows for the past 15 years, agrees wholeheartedly. “I just love it!” she says. “It’s such an important place for our community; somewhere to go, to be inspired, to feel connected. I wouldn’t miss a show!”
The theatre’s legacy includes hosting Canadian icons such as Rita MacNeil, Dan Hill, Jeff Healey, and the Jim Cuddy Band, along with local staples like Queensville Players, dance schools, community choirs, festivals, and children’s entertainment.
It was fitting that the theatre’s 40th anniversary celebration coincided with the 10th anniversary of the Encore Choir, led by director Dee Lawrence. A well-known advocate for the arts in Georgina, her choir celebrated their anniversary in the Leacock Theatre, singing on the stage that has supported so much local talent over the years.
With major upgrades planned — including new seating, improved accessibility, and updated technical systems — the Town is investing in keeping the theatre welcoming, modern, and ready for the next 40 years.
