Kuumba is a Swahili word meaning “creativity.” The Kuumba program uses creativity, connection, and cultural understanding to support African, Caribbean, and Black (ACB) children, youth, and families.
Families in Georgina will have an opportunity to explore emotions, wellness and connection through music and movement when the Kuumba Program presents Our Feelings Have Rhythm at the Georgina Public Library’s Keswick Branch on September 9.
This is Kuumba’s first event with the Georgina Library, although the program has already been building connections in the community. The team has worked with local schools and participated in the sixth Georgina Pan African Festival on August 1.
“Each time that we have had the opportunity to work alongside organizations or schools, we have been so welcomed,” says Teresa Knibb, Clinical Manager. “We wanted to take the opportunity to continue to build a partnership together.”
Our Feelings Have Rhythm is an emotion-focused group for children and caregivers. Led by Kuumba facilitators, the session will use discussion, body language and music to explore self-perception, expressing emotions, communication, coping strategies and resilience.
“We hope that folks who attend the event walk away with feelings of fun, joy and connection,” Knibb says. “It will hopefully start or continue conversations around mental health and well-being.”
For Knibb, Kuumba is also about making people feel seen and valued.
“It is about being able to come as you are,” she says, “to be embraced in a space that wants to know you, support you and learn from the incredible life story that each person shares.”
For anyone wondering whether the event is for them, Knibb offers a simple invitation: “Feel free to join. There is no pressure, and it would be great to have you.”
With music, conversation and creativity on the agenda, Our Feelings Have Rhythm offers families a chance to connect and perhaps discover that talking about feelings can be a little more fun when you add some rhythm.
