Volleyball tournament raises funds for Pefferlaw wildlife refuge.

Shades of Hope Volleyball Tournament

Savanna Quiring isn’t just great at blocking a spike, digging out a ball, or serving an ace to win the match. She’s also a great fundraiser for a cause she holds dear.

In just one month, the 28 year-old French teacher, from Duclos Point, organized a charity volleyball tournament at The ROC with over 50 participants, supported by 22 local sponsors, that raised $2350 for Shades of Hope, a wildlife refuge in Pefferlaw.

But that’s nothing new, according to her mother. “She’s really good at event planning, maybe she should make it a second career,” jokes Heather Allan-Quiring, who’s helping her daughter run the raffle on a blistering hot Saturday afternoon.

She also says her daughter has another passion: a love of animals. Indeed, Ms. Quiring grew up rescuing birds, turtles and even a racoon hit by a car — which explains her support for Shades of Hope.

“Shades of Hope is an amazing organization,” says Ms. Quiring. “They take in over 4,000 wild animals a year. They feed them, provide veterinary care with the goal of releasing them into the wild.”

“If you have any wildlife questions, about turtle eggs, a bird without a mom, an animal that’s been hit. You can call them, or bring the animal to them free of charge, no questions asked,” she says.

Ms. Quiring hopes to make the volleyball tournament an annual event, and there are also plans for a fundraising dinner banquet this winter.
