Georgina voters have spoken, and they want change. Only two incumbents were re-elected in the Oct. 26 municipal election, leaving the town with a largely new council.
Dale Kerr Genge was elected mayor, ending Margaret Quirk’s 12-year tenure. Genge received 7,127 votes in the mayoral race, defeating Quirk and challenger Frank Sebo, according to unofficial results released Monday night.
Genge ran her campaign on the promise, “I will always put taxpayers’ interests first.”
Quirk’s departure marks the end of 28 years of municipal service, including 16 years as Ward 1 councillor.
The outgoing mayor spoke to her supporters at Royal Canadian Legion Branch 356 in Sutton.
“Thank you for all your support over the years. I’m disappointed obviously, but there are worse things in life,” Quirk said. “I will be around in the community still.”
Frank Sebo posted on Facebook, “Although I was not successful in my bid to become Georgina’s next mayor, I am proud of the work that I put in, and I am still confident that the future is bright. Living in Georgina, we have much to be grateful for and much to look forward to.”
Naomi Davison was re-elected regional councillor, returning to a position she has held for the past six years. Charlene Biggerstaff was the other incumbent to win re-election, retaining her Ward 1 seat.
Voter turnout reached 29.13 percent, up from 27.23 percent in 2022. The Town reported that 13,123 ballots were cast, including 6,495 online votes.
