Excitement is building around Hospice Georgina’s Catch the Ace progressive lottery! This is week 46, with only a few envelopes left on the board, and one of them holds the Ace of Spades.

The jackpot is up to $220,000, and the next draw is on Wednesday, January 15.

Each week, tickets are sold to players hoping to select the Ace of Space from a deck of 52 regular playing cards. The purchaser chooses an envelope number, which is entered on their ticket.

A random draw is held, and the winner of that ticket automatically wins 20% of that week’s sales. Once the Ace of Spaces is drawn, the lottery is over, and someone goes home with the winnings.

The 50/50 lottery is in its eighth running and is used as a fundraising initiative to help support and build Hospice Georgina.

Laurie Knapp, the executive director, said, “While the lottery has been a valuable source of income, it alone cannot close the gap between our current funding and what is needed to bring our vision of a residential hospice to life.”

Knapp explains that York Region, with a population of over 1.2 million, has only 25 residential hospice beds. This underscores the pressing need for additional facilities to support our growing community.

Chair of Georgina Hospice Mary Margaret Thorburn said, “We call upon our Community to rally behind this essential cause. Every contribution, large or small, brings us one step closer to realizing the dream of a Residential Hospice for Georgina proper and Georgina Island. Whether through donations, participation in our fundraising events, or advocating for our cause, your support is invaluable.”

Hospice Georgina currently offers programs and services free of charge to individuals and families facing life-limiting illnesses and bereavement.

They are hoping to open a five-bed residential hospice, which will require approximately $1.5 million to build and another $1 million for furnishing and medical equipment.

Knapp said, “With partial funding from Ontario Health and United Way, our hospice remains committed to bridging the gap to meet our overall operating budget through community support, donors, and innovative fundraising efforts.”

Tickets are $5 a piece and can be purchased on-line at various retailers like the Link, Auntie M’s Closet in Keswick, Zehrs, No Frills Sutton, the Ice Palace, Black River Coffee, Sobeys in Sutton, or online at https://ace.hospicegeorgina.com.
