TORONTO — Ontario is reporting 1,228 new cases of COVID-19 today and 28 more deaths attributed to the novel coronavirus.

The numbers mark the highest tally this week, after the province added 1,150 cases Friday.

Health Minister Christine Elliott says the latest figures include 331 new cases in Toronto, 228 in Peel and 132 in York Region.

The update comes as York Region prepares to return to the provincial colour-coded pandemic response plan at the red level on Monday, leaving just Toronto, Peel and the North Bay Parry Sound health unit under a stay-at-home order.

The number of resolved cases continues to outpace new infections, with 1,313 added to the tally over the past 24 hours.

Health officials say 699 patients are in hospital with COVID-19, 263 of whom are in intensive care including 181 on a ventilator.

Elliott says 540,129 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine have been administered as of Friday night.
