February is Black History Month, a time to recognize and celebrate the achievements, contributions, and resilience of Black communities—past and present. In Georgina, it’s also a time to learn, connect, and celebrate together, with a full month of programs that invite residents of all ages to take part.
Throughout the month, the Town, the Georgina Public Library, and local organizations are offering events that blend history, creativity, and fun.
Much of this programming is powered by the energy and vision of Kendra Shae-Marie Mullings, founder of the Georgina Black Excellence Society and Black Saturday School. Known for her creativity and unstoppable drive, Mullings has been instrumental in bringing meaningful, hands-on learning opportunities to the community.
At the Georgina Public Library’s Keswick Branch, Black Saturday School returns for its third year of adult programming on Wednesday, February 11, with The Black Family in Media, exploring stereotypes, representation, and diversity in film and television.
Younger participants can dive into a four-part interactive series on Black music, exploring country, hip hop, jazz, and reggae every Saturday in February.
Families are also invited to a Black History Month Storytime on Saturday, Feb. 21, where stories, and even a brand-new one created together, take centre stage.
Also at the Keswick Branch, Steelpan Music with Pan Fyah on Feb. 28 will bring the history, heart, and irresistible sound of this iconic instrument to life for all ages.
Beyond the library, the learning keeps moving at the MURC, where Jamaican Dancehall instruction and Learn to Braid workshops invite residents to dance, create, and discover the stories behind the skills.
With opportunities for adults, teens, and children, Black History Month in Georgina is an invitation to learn, reflect, and connect. Full details and schedules are available at georgina.ca/BlackHistoryMonth
