The Town of Georgina lost a valued community leader, neighbour and friend with the passing of Ken Hackenbrook on March 5.

A long-time resident of Georgina, Ken served as Ward 4 Councillor, representing the Sutton area, for 20 years, from 1994 to 2014.

Ken and his wife, Lorraine, were instrumental in improving safety at Morning Glory P.S., helping to secure a turning lane and school-zone lights.

He also pushed for upgrades to Town arenas and recreation facilities, as well as pedestrian sidewalks in Virginia.

Ken provided leadership and support to many local fundraising campaigns, including the Terry Fox Run and the Walk for Alzheimer’s. He was also active with the Sunkist Beach Association and the Egypt Hall Board.

He contributed to the success of many local sports teams, principally hockey and baseball, bringing charity events, such as the CNIB “Ice Owls” charity hockey game, to Georgina, as well as coaching and helping establish the Georgina Hockey School.

“Ken’s life was a tremendous blessing because he wholeheartedly gave of himself to all. He did far more than live; he selflessly enriched the lives of countless people with his genuine empathy, endless kindness and tireless passion to help others and improve the Town he so loved,” said Laurie Carriere-Pangman, organizer of the annual Georgina Terry Fox Run.

“I am deeply saddened by the passing of former Councillor Ken Hackenbrook, a long-time resident of Georgina who contributed greatly to our community through his 20 years on council and his extensive volunteer involvement. I was honoured to serve with him for 16 years, and he was a strong advocate for his community and residents. Ken Hackenbrook embodied community spirit. His legacy and the positive impact he made in Georgina will be long remembered,” Mayor Margaret Quirk wrote on her Facebook page.

Ken leaves behind Lorraine, his wife of almost 65 years, four children, nine grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

A visitation will be held at Knox United Church (34 Market Street) on Saturday, March 14, from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m, with a memorial service to follow.

Donations in Ken’s honour can be made to Hospice Georgina or the Georgina Food Pantry.
