On June 5, the Town of Georgina announced its first inductees into the new Georgina Sports Hall of Fame.

The late Ken Hackenbrook is being inducted as a builder, while Mike Sedore will be inducted as an athlete and builder.

Hackenbrook is being recognized for his role in developing youth hockey in Georgina. He founded Georgina’s first hockey school, introducing more than 1,000 children to the sport. He also mentored numerous coaches, officials and volunteers who continue to support youth hockey in our community. Hackenbrook, who also served as Ward 4 Councillor for 20 years, passed away in March of this year.

As a fastpitch softball player, Sedore won the International Softball Congress (ISC) World Championship in 1993 with his team, the Toronto Gators — the first Canadian team to win North America’s premier event for men’s fastpitch softball teams. He also won multiple provincial and national championships and is a member of the Softball Canada Hall of Fame. As a builder, Sedore is being recognized for his support and development of local athletes in fastball and hockey spanning more than 28 years, including coaching championship teams and mentoring athletes who have competed at junior, collegiate, and professional levels.

In a Facebook post, Sedore said he was honoured to be inducted alongside Ken Hackenbrook.

“Growing up in Georgina, fastball and hockey were a big part of my life and gave me opportunities, lifelong friendships and memories I will always treasure,” said Sedore. “This honour reflects the support of so many people who helped shape my journey. I have been fortunate to have amazing coaches, dedicated teammates, supportive friends, and, most importantly, a family that encouraged me every step of the way. Being recognized by the community where my story began, and the place I still call home, makes this honour especially meaningful.”

In addition to this year’s inductees, the Town is also recognizing the Keswick High School Girls Varsity Hockey Team as part of the Sports Team Honour Roll. The team is being acknowledged for advancing to the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) championships.

Announced in March, the Georgina Sports Hall of Fame is located at the Multi-Use Recreation Complex (MURC) and features an interactive display and a complementary website.

“The Georgina Sports Hall of Fame will stand as a permanent celebration of the athletes, coaches, officials and community builders who have helped define our Town’s rich sporting history,” said Mayor Margaret Quirk in a media release. “As the first-ever inductees, Ken Hackenbrook and Mike Sedore set a high standard for excellence, dedication and community impact. Their support and commitment to youth sports is a testament to the values of teamwork, determination and community pride that will continue to motivate others for years to come.”

The 2026 Georgina Sports Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will take place on June 19 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the MURC. Tickets are $20 per person. Seating is limited. To purchase tickets, visit georgina.ca/HallofFame.
