Two young martial artists are putting Georgina on the international map — and their journey is only just beginning.
Delwin (14) and Bryden (16) Selestien have been collecting gold medals and getting opportunities to represent Canada on the world stage through talent, discipline and countless hours of training.
In April, Delwin captured a gold medal at the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF) European Kids Championship in Dublin, Ireland. Competing against opponents from Ukraine, Brazil and Ireland, he won all three of his matches, securing victories of 2-0, 4-2 and 5-0 on his way to the top of the podium.
His winning streak continued at the Ontario Open Jiu-Jitsu Championship in Oshawa, where he earned another gold medal on May 3.
Meanwhile, Bryden has been making a name for himself closer to home, winning gold at both the Aurora Open and the Windsor Open.
The brothers’ success is no accident. Behind every medal there are early mornings, long training sessions and a commitment to constant improvement. Their dedication has already opened doors to some of the most prestigious competitions in the world.
Delwin’s next challenge will be the IBJJF Kids Pans in Florida this July. Then in August, both boys will represent Canada at the Ju-Jitsu International Federation (JJIF) World Championship in Abu Dhabi, followed by the IBJJF Jiu-Jitsu Con International in Las Vegas in September.
For a community that recently celebrated the opening of Georgina’s Sports Hall of Fame, the achievements of these young athletes are a reminder that future Hall of Fame inductees may already be among us.
While their talent and determination have taken them far, international competition comes with significant travel and training expenses. To date, the Optimist Club of Keswick has been their primary sponsor, but additional financial support from the community is needed to help the brothers continue competing at the highest level.
Local businesses and individuals interested in supporting these promising athletes can contact their father, Jerard Selestien, at 416-625-2833 or takedownbrothers@gmail.com.
With hard work, determination and a growing collection of gold medals, Delwin and Bryden are proving that big dreams can begin in Georgina.
