The Town of Georgina has activated its Emergency Operations Centre but hasn’t yet declared a state of emergency, according to Mayor Margaret Quirk.
That declaration may come later today, and would follow Newmarket and Aurora’s lead, both town’s declaring states of emergency to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic this week.
“The Town is looking at all options, including an emergency declaration. Other topics being discussed today include food security and financial issues for residents and businesses,” Mayor Quirk stated in a Facebook post this afternoon. “This is an constantly evolving situation with changes occurring on an hourly basis.”
“I know these are certainly unsettling times, I encourage all of you to practice social distancing, and as the medical officer of Health from Toronto stated: “We are new to social distancing, so I want to be perfectly clear – having friends over for coffee is not social distancing,” Mayor Quirk added.
“Ask for help from friends and family, most of us are reluctant to do so, but these are extraordinary times and we need to ask for help when needed. We can still practice social distancing while helping each other. Let’s work together on breaking the chain of infection, together we can do it.”
