YRP blocks traffic on Station Rd. during investigation

A Pefferlaw man has been charged with criminal harassment and mischief after allegedly planting a fake bomb in a shed behind a house located on Old Homestead Rd, near Station Rd.

“On Tuesday, June 2, 2020, at 12:39 pm, YRP were called to a residence on Old Homestead Road for a report of a suspicious package. A resident of the home found a package that had wires on it with a note attached,” said Sgt. Andy Pattenden with York Regional Police.

“Out of an abundance of caution, officers with our Emergency Response Unit attended to assess and deal with the package. At the same time, officers were searching the area for a suspect who was believed to have left the suspicious package and who had been seen in the area.”

The “suspicious package” turned out to be a vehicle airbag and was not considered an “actual threat to safety.”

According to Sgt. Pattenden, the suspect was not located during the initial search but was later contacted by YRP.

At midnight on June 2, he turned himself at YRP District Headquarters in Newmarket, where he was charged.

According to the Criminal Code, the man could face up to 6 months in prison for criminal mischief under a summary conviction.

The criminal harassment charge is more serious. If found guilty, he could face up to 18 months in prison and a $5000 fine, again under a summary conviction.

YRP is not releasing the identity of the man charged to prevent victims from being identified, said Sgt. Pattenden.
