The Salvation Army kicked off their annual Christmas Kettle Campaign on November 14 at Zehrs in Keswick, and they are hoping to raise $48,000 this year.

The Salvation Army Georgina Community Church partnered with Zehrs and Walmart in Keswick to host their Christmas kettles this year. Many of the other businesses that usually participate are not due to COVID-19.

Major Colleen Winter, the Salvation Army pastor in Georgina, said at the kickoff celebration that they were thankful for their partners and COVID-19 safety precautions will be followed while collecting donations.

“I want to say thank you to the community here. This is a time when we really need to offer hope, and with COVID-19, we realize there are a lot more people hurting,” she said.

The $48,000 that they hope to raise will all stay in the community and will be used to help those in need throughout the year.

“That target is to help us through the year with gift cards, food, clothing, also networking with other people, if we can’t do it for them, we will get help through other people for our community,” she said.

Scot Davidson, MP for York Simcoe, also attended the kickoff event. He donated a red $50.00 bill to add a little Christmas colour to the kettle.

“There are a lot of people in need this time of year, so this is a time when we reach for the best in ourselves and the best in other people. And I want to thank everyone for stepping up and making contributions whenever they can,” he said.

Leslie Hicks, Kettle Coordinator, said the Georgina Community Church is looking for volunteers to stand at the kettle locations for two-hour stints from now until December 24. You can contact Carol and Leslie Hicks, the Kettle Coordinators, at (905) 954-5154 to volunteer.
