The Pefferlaw Lioness Lions are preparing for the annual Pet Valu Walk for Dog Guides and are looking for participants and donations.
The walk will take place on May 28 at Pefferlaw Lions Park, 38 Pete’s Lane. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m., and the walk will start at 9:00 a.m..
The Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides (LFCDG) is a not-for-profit charity that relies on fundraising to provide dog guides at no cost to Canadians in need.
Jean Stephens, chairperson for the Pefferlaw Pet Value Walk for Dog Guides, said 100 per cent of the funds raised go toward the seven dog guide programs; canine vision, hearing, service, seizure response, autism assistance, diabetic alert and facility support.
Stephens said it’s not just about raising money, but about the community coming together and about getting the information about the program out there for anyone in need of a service dog.

“Last year was our best year, we had a really good turnout,” she said.
“But it’s gone online now, so even if you’re shy, or you don’t have a dog, or the weather’s inclement, you can make a donation from home.”
Stephens said last year they raised $3,200 with 15 walkers and as many dogs. Their goal this year is to raise $3,000 to $5,000.
“I think it’s good for new participants to come out, we have a lot of new residents in the area that aren’t aware of what we do for community spirit, and I think this is a good opportunity to meet other likeminded people,” she said.
Stephens said you can walk with your pet dogs and that there will be competitions at the start of the day for things like the best dressed dog or the longest tail.
“With 1 in 5 Canadians living with a disability, Dog Guides are in high demand,” explains Andrea Stevens, Manager of Events at LFCDG, in a press release.
“Each Dog Guide team costs $35,000, however, none of that cost is passed down to the applicant. LFCDG relies on the success of all Pet Valu Walk for Dog Guides that take place across Canada.”
