Roller derby is known for speed, strategy and spectacular hits. What many people don’t expect is one of the sport’s biggest strengths—a welcoming, supportive community.
The Hell’s Belles, flagship team of Georgina Roller Derby League (GRDL), took to the track at Sutton Arena on June 27 against Durham Region Roller Derby’s Select Team, before a beginner and intermediate scrimmage showcased the sport’s rising talent.
For Charlene Angel (a.k.a. Another Chick in the Wall) and Stephanie Angel (a.k.a. Stephcon1), joining the league started as a way to spend more time together.
“We’re sisters, so we thought it would be something fun to do together,” says Charlene.
What they found was much more than a sport.
“Everyone is so supportive,” says Stephanie. “It’s competitive, but everybody is friendly. No matter what team or league you’re from, everyone supports each other. It’s so inclusive.”

That welcoming atmosphere is what keeps skaters like Tina Taylor coming back.
“I’ve always loved roller skating,” she says. “I stopped for a year, but I missed it, so now I’m back. I’ve never been part of a group that’s so kind. Really, the name of the game is just to have fun.”
That philosophy comes from league founder and president Michelle Vacca, better known on the track as Veronica disLodge #76.
She launched GRDL in 2019. Today, there are about 20 members ranging in age from 19 to over 50.
Some compete with the Hell’s Belles, while others are learning through Derby 101.
“We take people from zero to hero,” Vacca says. More than anything, she wants people to know roller derby is for everyone.
“This sport is for all ages, all shapes and all sizes. Our league is known throughout the derby community for being fun,” she adds.
That doesn’t mean the competition isn’t real.
Roller derby is a full-contact sport played by two teams of five skaters. It combines speed, strategy, teamwork and plenty of controlled chaos.
Anyone inspired to lace up a pair of skates can sign up for the league’s next Derby 101 program. You don’t need any experience; but you must be willing to have fun!
