There were plenty of shiny cars, roaring engines and enthusiastic car lovers at the second annual Motor Mania Georgina on Saturday, September 5.
More than 400 vehicles rolled into the grounds of Pefferlaw Lions Community Centre for a day celebrating everything on four wheels, all while raising money for local charities.
The event, organized by the Kinsmen of Georgina and the Dirty Birdz Car Club, had an extra hurdle to clear this year. Heavy rain turned the Sutton Fairgrounds — the show’s usual home — into a veritable swamp, forcing organizers to scramble for a new venue at the last minute.
Greg Griffin, president of the Dirty Birdz Car Club, said, “The community really came together to help us move, and I want to thank the Town, the council, Pefferlaw Lions Club with President Brian Busby, and a long list of others who stepped in. It is fantastic to see so many people turn up,” he added, “and community support is wonderful.”
For Mike Bennett of the Kinsmen of Georgina, the idea to bring a car show here started with a simple truth: car people tend to find each other. “Many Kinsmen members are car enthusiasts themselves, and some have impressive collections — including one who owns 15 classic cars!” he said. “We were going to car shows, and then we thought, why not have one here ourselves?”
What started as a good idea has become a community staple: a day for owners to show off their pride and joy, vendors to connect with neighbours, and families to just enjoy being out together.
” I love that the money we raise stays within our community,” Bennett adds, “and seeing families come out and enjoy the show is awesome. There’s something here for everyone.”
Behind the scenes, about 30 vendors, food providers and contractors helped keep everything running smoothly. They had the support of 56 volunteers, including five Georgina College students — up from 38 volunteers last year.
For Adeeba, who brought her sons Ishan, Zayden and Tej it was a win on every front. She said, “It’s a chance to support the community, spend time together, and let the boys admire the cars. They love cars.” Right on cue, the boys chime in, “We love all the cars!” They already have a solid collection — of the miniature variety. Someday, they’re hoping to roll in with the full-size ones!
With hundreds of vehicles, dozens of vendors, and an army of volunteers, Motor Mania proved once again that Georgina doesn’t just have horsepower — it has heart!
