Shannon Laframboise, the owner of Lucy’s Diner, saw an impressive crowd on June 7 as her barbecue drew regular clients and new visitors alike. Laframboise said, “Two years down and forever to go!”

Lucy’s Diner in Pefferlaw opened its 1950s-themed doors on Saturday, June 1, 2024, and has been serving food and cheer to the community almost every ‘flipping’ day since.

Leaning into the retro vibe of the diner, the team communicated with walkie-talkies as they served burgers, sausages, hot dogs, fries, onion rings, potato salad and coleslaw.

Averie-Mae Boonstra, 6, of Beaverton, wore her best dress for the celebration.

Her father, Nathan Boonstra, said, “We are originally from Pefferlaw and are longtime friends of the owner and staff of Lucy’s. We came to enjoy the music and support the restaurant.”

The Boonstras weren’t alone. Cars lined the road in both directions and a crowd danced in front of the stage. Musicians included Johnny Barron, Ugly Bridesmaids, Silver & Strings, West & Mac, Ross and Turkey Scratch.

Laframboise said, “I would say that opening this place has been like coming home to me. I loved working here years ago, and now I own it. Many of the regular customers from back then have returned and have been so supportive. It never feels like work. We laugh and joke all day, every day.”

When asked about her inspiration for the name of her diner, Laframboise said, “Bob Harlop, who passed four years ago, used to sit on the same stool with his coffee and toast. He’d be there for three hours daily, cracking dirty jokes. His nickname for me was ‘Lucy,’ from the TV show I Love Lucy, and we named the diner in his memory.”
